Sports and Eating Disorders: Understanding and Managing the Risk when Working with Athletes

  • 20 Milk Street Portland, ME, 04101 United States (map)

Working with athletes requires a nuanced understanding of the intersection between sport culture, performance expectations, and eating disorder risk. This continuing education presentation is designed for clinicians, coaches, and health professionals who want to deepen their ability to recognize and respond to eating disorders within athletic populations.

This session will explore sport-specific risk factors and examine the differences between lean and non-lean sports, highlighting how pressures vary across disciplines. Participants will also consider the similarities between individuals with anorexia nervosa and highly trained athletes, including shared traits such as discipline, high pain tolerance, and rigid performance standards. Understanding these overlaps is essential for accurate assessment and appropriate intervention.

Presenters will review key assessment tools and provide practical guidance on the types of questions clinicians should be asking when evaluating athletes for clinical eating disorder behaviors. Attendees will gain clarity on how assessments for athletes differ from assessments for non-athletes, and why traditional screening approaches may miss important red flags in this population.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

• Describe the role of the interdisciplinary team in supporting athletes with eating disorders
• Explain how assessments for athletes differ from assessments for non-athletes
